So, Black Friday has come and gone. The 2018 Small Business Saturday is now in the history books. And of course, the news is that more money was spent this year than ever before on Cyber Monday sales.

I know many of you hit the stores and markets this past weekend, but did you spend all your money?

Hey, we have another weekend of holiday markets, entertainment and the promise of delicious food right here in Grant County… so I hope you aren’t broke yet.

Hmmm… where do we start? Well, there’s the 5th Annual Artisan Holiday Market this Saturday and Sunday at the Grant County Conference Center. Or you can drive out to the 2nd Annual Christmas Mercado at the Hanover Outpost on Saturday and Sunday. You can always take in a good movie. “The House with a Clock in the Walls” is showing at the WNMU Light Hall Theater this weekend. Hey, how about going to a play? The Silver City Community Theater is presenting “Deathtrap” by Ira Levin on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Even the Church of the Good Shepherd, at the corner of 7th and Texas Streets in Silver City, is having their First Saturday Garage Sale.

Looking for more holiday festivities? Santa Clara is hosting the Tamal Fiesta y Mas this Saturday… and they will have the Santa Clara Lights Christmas Parade. I’m betting they will be on the look-out for Confederate flags in their parade. And it seems that Santa Claus is staying busy this weekend. That poor old guy has got to be getting tired from taking pictures with people all over the county.

And it’s not too late to order wreaths through the WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA program. The deadline for online orders is December 3, 2018. When you place an order online, please be sure to request your wreath goes to the Fort Bayard National Cemetery. Wreath placement will be held on December 14 with the official ceremony on December 15 at 10:00 a.m.

Seriously, these are just a few of the things you can do right here in your own county… spending money right here in your own county… supporting businesses and jobs right here in your own county. It just makes good sense to do as much shopping, spending money, right here in Grant County.

Something we are doing more and more is helping with ribbon cutting ceremonies. We have one coming up on Friday – December 14 at 11:00 a.m. for the new Gila Regional Foot and Ankle Center at 1280 East 32nd Street in Silver City. This will be a great time to meet Dr. Gregory Iwassa and his staff, and learn about Silver City’s newest Foot and Ankle Clinic.

As I’m writing this, I’m enjoying another year of growing older. I got to work at 6:45 a.m. and I’m leaving at about 6:45 p.m. I’m going to visit one of the local restaurants and get some take-out for my wife and I. She had surgery on her foot last week and can’t place any weight on it, so we are dining out in front of the televisions tonight. But we will still be spending our money on a local meal.

I hope your Thanksgiving holiday was a joyous occasion and on behalf of the members of the Chamber of Commerce, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
