 IS THE BIBLE TRUE? Jan. 4, 2018

Well, I can’t prove the Bible is true. Neither can anyone prove it’s not true. But, we can make some common sense judgements of its worth based on what we know. Here is some of what we know:

     There are 66 books in the Bible, 39 in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament.  

 These 66 books were written over a spread of about 1,600 years – from Job -- about 1,500 BC, to Revelation -- about 100 AD.

     The 66 books had about 40 authors, some authors are known, the identity of many are an educated guess, and others are unknown.

     The authors were a mixed bag of shepherds, fishermen, soldiers, physicians, government officials, preachers, kings, self-employed businessmen, and others.

     Most did not know one another.

    The books were written in three languages; Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

    The authors lived on three continents and under at least three different forms of government.

The Pentateuch (first five books of the Bible) were not necessarily the first books written. They were probably authored by Moses around 1400 BC, according to most Bible scholars. Exact dates and identities of authors for many Old Testament books are best guesses based on many factors. Job, while not the first book of the Bible, is generally thought to be the oldest.

Can you imagine multiple volumes written over a millennium and a half by different authors from varying backgrounds, attempting to explain a controversial subject, to be in agreement today? Shoot, finding two books in accord on the same subject written in just the past year would be a tough chore.

Knowing this consistency about the Bible should give a seeker of truth pause. The wondrous aspect of the Bible is that the 66 books, having different origins, all agree in pointing the way to Jesus Christ as Savior of the world.

Additionally, the Bible itself claims while it was penned by men, the authors were led by God; “for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” – II Peter 1:21, and “all Scripture is given by the inspiration of God,” – II Timothy 3:16a.

Do you think common sense would dictate not rejecting the Bible, but to look between its covers? Maybe there’s something to it.
