At the annual New Mexico Recycling and Solid Waste Conference held at the Hotel Albuquerque on September 23 and 24, Southwest Solid Waste Authority (SWSWA) received two of four statewide recycling awards. They were named the recycling facility of the year and Lawrence Grijalva was named the recycling employee of the year.

Patrick Peck, President of NMRC, stated in announcing the facility of the year award "Southwest Solid Waste Authority has made significant efforts over the past several years to expand the services it provides to the community and at the same time become more financially solvent." When presenting Mr. Grijalva with his award he said, "He is highly motivated to do everything he can to excel in his profession. Congratulations Lawrence for your hard work and excellence at your job!"

The conference is a two day event organized by the New Mexico Recycling Coalition (NMRC) and the New Mexico Roadrunner chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America. The theme of this year's conference was integrating solutions to better manage solid waste and recycling. Over 60 presentations were made at the conference by state and national leaders in the fields of recycling and solid waste. NMRC is a member-supported non-profit organization with the mission of leading New Mexico to value waste as a resource. Since 2002 NMRC has recognized individuals, businesses and communities that work to reduce waste and support recycling and composting in New Mexico.

Alex Brown, chairman of the board of directors of SWSWA, expressed "compliments to the staff of SWSWA for all their hard work and also to the public for their participation in the recycling program. Working together is what makes it a success."
