Taking place during International Latino Aids Awareness Week, Panels from Nobel Prize-Nominated AIDS Memorial Quilt on Display at WNMU Graham Gym Oct-13-17
Silver City, NM / WNMU: The Names Project Quilts, also known as AIDS Memorial Quilts bring with them a rich, diverse and compassionate history. Honoring those that have gone before us, the quilts also speak to the love, support and devotion of survivors--those friends and family members who pay homage to those names woven into the quilts, and to those who live and thrive, in spite of their HIV/AIDS diagnosis.
Sections of the internationally celebrated AIDS Memorial Quilt – the 54-ton, handmade tapestry that stands as a memorial to more than 94,000 individuals lost to AIDS – will be on view from October 13-17 at the Graham Gym, WNMU Campus, Silver City. This free display of The AIDS Memorial Quilt is being hosted by LGBT Grant County, and Gamma Mu, and visitors may attend according to the schedule below:
In order to heighten awareness, event organizers scheduled the displays to be shown during International Latino Aids Awareness Week --
(Oct. 13th thru 17th) the NAMES PROJECT QUILTS WILL BE ON DISPLAY AT GRAHAM GYM ON WNMU CAMPUS.
MONDAY, WEDNESDAY FRIDAY FROM 1pm till 7pm and TUESDAY AND THURSDAY FROM 1pm till 5pm. THERE WILL BE 6 PANELS THIS YEAR!!!
ON WEDNESDAY (15TH) FROM 5 TILL 7PM A RECEPTION WILL BE HELD WITH REFRESHMENTS.
PLEASE COME BY AND VIEW THE QUILTS. IF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THEM NOW IS THE TIME.
In a war against a disease that has no cure, The AIDS Memorial Quilt has evolved as our most potent tool in the effort to educate against the lethal threat of AIDS. By revealing the humanity behind the statistics, The AIDS Memorial Quilt helps teach compassion, triumphs over taboo, stigma and phobia; and inspires individuals to take direct responsibility for their own well-being and that of their family, friends and community.
Julie Rhoad, Executive Director of The NAMES Project Foundation explains, "We are thrilled to have the chance to share The AIDS Memorial Quilt with your community. These handmade blocks, created by friends and family, tell the stories of individuals who have lost their lives to AIDS. We bring you their stories in the hope of inspiring compassion, healing and personal responsibility. Sections are continuously on display across the country in schools, churches, community centers, businesses, corporations and a variety of other institutional settings all in the hope of making the realities of HIV and AIDS real, human and immediate. To date, more than 15 million people have seen The AIDS Memorial Quilt at tens of thousands of display throughout the world.
