Silver City, NM February 16, 2015 - The Nuevos Comienzos Logo Contest winner has been chosen. After a long morning of reviewing over thirty entries, "we finally narrowed it down to the winning entry, with the kind folks at The Volunteer Center volunteering their time to be the judges," said kitchen manager Barb Fila. "It wasn't an easy task; we had to make a difficult decision," declared Alicia Edwards, executive director of The Volunteer Center; "but we were pleased to have had so many entries for the contest."

And the winner is....

Elena Mitchel, a FoodCorps volunteer at Sixth Street Elementary, received the most votes for her submission. Afterwards, she modified her design, incorporating a portion of The Volunteer Center's logo to bring it all together. Mitchel also graciously donated her prize of art supplies worth over $400 to the teachers whose classes participated in the contest.

Three teachers Silver City encouraged their classes to participate in the contest: Trish Doherty, at Harrison Schmidt; Lydia Burns, art instructor at both Sixth Street and Jose Barrio Schools; and Brian Tudor, from Silver High. "My kids really did enjoy working on the logos, and it was the perfect experience for those of them who are serious about pursuing art as more than a hobby," stated Doherty, whose classes contributed to well over half of the entries.

The logo will be used in "all things kitchen, and then some" kitchen manger Fila says. "Aprons, baseball caps, and refrigerator magnets will be sporting our new logo, for starters. We'll be selling the aprons and ball caps as a fundraiser at various local events. Stay tuned."
