Theresa RSTheresa MurphyThe Imagination Library of Grant County boasts 36 active volunteers. Typically spring and fall are busiest for volunteers due to the high number of registration events, but individuals have already logged 30 service hours in 2016. Program Coordinator, Nancy Stephens, recently interviewed Theresa Murphy who has registered children for free books at three events so far this year. Theresa started volunteering with the Imagination Library because she loves reading and believes in giving back to her community. She appreciates how Dolly Parton's Imagination Library carefully chooses age appropriate books. "What a wonderful thing for a child to receive a monthly book in the mail with their name on it!"

Murphy finds reading to be relaxing and enjoyable, as she gets to experience new adventures through books. As a child, she loved "The Cat in the Hat" and "Uncle Wiggly". "Anna Karenina" is one of her all-time favorites. Theresa loves reading so much that her husband, Ray, built Theresa her own free library last Christmas and added an addition for children this year. He also added a free garden, and the neighborhood added pavers and a bench. Theresa and Ray are the stewards, but Theresa points out, "The library belongs to everyone. Come by sometime." The Murphy library is located in Silver City at the corner of Georgia and Gordan. Visit LittleFreeLibrary.org to find how to start your own little library or find one when you're traveling. Theresa reminds readers that the Silver City Public Library is a friend to all.

As a parent and grandparent, Theresa knows how important being read to is, and she shared some observations. "Reading starts when a baby is born. A child who has been read to will be more successful in school. The bond you make with your child while reading together is a gift you give for life." As a teacher, Theresa witnessed how all children want to read. "The key is giving them the tools and encouragement. Older students still love to be read to."

Theresa and Ray feel blessed to have been in Silver City for almost 2 years. They have 2 boys and 5 grandchildren, along with a dog and 2 cats. Murphy is involved with The Woman's Club and serves on the board for the Silver City Community Theater. She believes the Arts help to make us well rounded in a complex world. Theresa also believes in learning something new every day, and she is glad Silver City encourages that feeling. "The Gila is a playground for all ages," says Murphy.

The Imagination Library of Grant County seeks volunteers to help with quarterly mailings, book registrations and other projects. The not for profit organization plans to host a volunteer appreciation event in late summer.
