Grant County, NM (May 3, 2016)'State Senator Howie Morales (D-Dist28) was on hand to launch the school wide 5210 Challenge at Hurley Elementary School. Sponsored by Healthy Kids Healthy Communities Grant County, the 5210 Challenge challenges kids to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour of physical activity and to drink lots water instead of soda or sports drinks every day for 21 days. The point of the Challenge is to help kids build healthy new habits that will make it easier for them to make good decisions about the food they eat and the amount of exercise they get. After talking to the kids about how healthy eating and physical activity positively affects both academics and athletics, the Senator played a rousing game of hits and strikes with the kids. "The kids were doing great deciding whether a certain type of food was a hit or a strike but you could tell that some of the choices were supposed to be strikes but they really wanted them to be hits---like cookies for example. There was lots of groaning on that one", says Alicia Edwards, HKHC Coordinator. "The Senator followed that with an explanation of moderation which seemed to make them feel better. After the game was over, the kids got to try either cucumber lemon or mint blackberry infused water. "I told them it was so tasty they'd never want soda or sports drink again, " says Alicia. The Challenge will conclude on May 24th with an awards ceremony and medals for the kids that completed the requirements for the whole 21 days.
