The purpose of this first-time partnership was to collect crochet materials and make handmade items, such as blankets, hats, and mittens, for local, foster children. Over the past few months, many items have already been distributed by the HMS Ena Mitchell Senior Center staff in Lordsburg to Debbie Orona, CYFD Luna and Hidalgo County Office Manager to share directly with foster children in need.

According to April Hunter, HMS Senior Services Program Manager, "The HMS Ena Mitchell Senior Center has received many beautiful items from Grant and Hidalgo County seniors and community members." Hunter added, "This has been, and will continue to be, an inspiring example of how much can be accomplished together for a great cause." Leslie Tomerlin, HMS Senior Center Program Coordinator stated, "I am really amazed by the support from our communities, and the individual efforts of such generous people in both Hidalgo and Grant counties."

According to Hunter, the "Crochet for Kids" project through the HMS Senior Center in Lordsburg no longer needs supplies. Those individuals interested in participating in ongoing crochet activities are encouraged to contact the HMS Ena Mitchell Senior Center directly at (575) 542-9414. Seniors are invited to work on the project every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:00am at the HMS Senior Center in Lordsburg.
