Silver City, NM - The Town of Silver City has installed recycling bins in the downtown historic district. The Office of Sustainability obtained a grant from the New Mexico Tourism Department's New Mexico Clean and Beautiful program to purchase the bins.

The green bins are similar in design to the existing brown trash bins and maintain a uniform look for the downtown area. People can use them to recycle the same items that are recycled in all of Grant County. The bins have decals indicating that they accept paper, plastic, cans and cartons.

Unfortunately, glass is no longer recycled in Grant County due to lack of markets so put glass in the trash. Please do not put Styrofoam in the green recycling bins as it is not recyclable and is frequently contaminated with food. Food residue is probably the biggest problem when recycled items get processed, that is why pizza boxes are not recyclable.

The new green recycling bins are located near the brown trash bins so people can appropriately either dispose or recycle items conveniently.

For additional information on recycling visit the recycling page on the Town website at townofsilvercity.org or contact the Office of Sustainability at 519-8987.
