at the Gila Regional Cancer Center
A Graduate from University of New Mexico (UNM), Ciro Chairez has 23 years of experience as a Radiation Therapist. For the past nine years Ciro has been an employee of the New Mexico Cancer Center (NMCC) serving patients at Gila Regional Medical Center (GRMC). When the cancer care providers changed to the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, Mr. Chairez chose to stay with GRMC.

"I am established here," said Ciro. "I have three boys, 15, 11 and 2 years old, and my wife is in Nursing School at Western New Mexico University. I have travelled all over the country from Seattle to coastal Georgia and Silver City is the best place I have been. The community and the climate are amazing."

When asked how he felt about the transition to UNM, Ciro said that it was a great opportunity for the community and patients at GRMC.

"It will be great to see what UNM has to offer our patients, they have the latest and greatest methods in fighting cancer" added Mr. Chairez. "It has been a challenging situation, but I have to move forward, for my patients and my family. Also I really love working with the 'Cadillac' of Radiation Therapy machines with the Linear Accelerator at GRMC."

The contract with UNM was signed on Monday, July 17, 2017 and three oncologists are in the process of being credentialed to cover patient care once a week at the Cancer Center. This is only temporary until a full time oncologist can be put in place to cover services Monday through Friday.

"We are so happy to have Ciro," said Taffy Arias, Chief Executive Officer of GRMC. "His knowledge and technical expertise with the Linear Accelerator will continue to help our Cancer Patients. It is my sincere wish that patients who may have chosen to find services out of town due to this transition will reconsider. UNM will offer the very best in care; of this I have no doubt."
