Inaugural CLAY Festival Mud-slinging Rodeo a fun-filled event

Silver City, NM — The inaugural Mud-Slinging Rodeo took place after the dedication of The Big Ditch Mural on Sunday, July 23rd and was enjoyed by both spectators and participants. It was a new addition to the CLAY Festival conceived by Diana Ingalls Leyba of Leyba & Ingalls ARTS and offered a chance to watch experienced potters in a throwing competition. It took place in the Big Ditch with competitive categories such as the tallest cylinder, largest platter, and even a blind-folded throwing competition!

Diane's Restaurant made and donated snacks to the event. Local artists Patty Countryman and Chrissy Ramirez prepared the clay and WNMU Professor Emeritus Claude Smith arranged for potter's wheels and other supplies to be borrowed from the WNMU Expressive Arts Department. Individual category prizes were supplies donated by Leyba & Ingalls ARTS. Tallest Cylinder went to Tolley Rippon, Largest Platter...Tolley Rippon, Most Bowls...Patty Countryman, Fastest Teapot...Louie Anderson, Blind-folded...Tolley Rippon, and Craziest...Chris Sowers. Jean-Robert P. Béffort of A-Space Gallery created the 1st place trophy, which was won by ceramic artist Tolley Rippon for placing 1st in several categories.
