On January 6, 2018 a cattle producer workshop was held at the NMSU Grant County Cooperative Extension Service. Presentations were offered by Dr. Marcy Ward, NMSU Livestock Specialist, Dr. Craig Gifford NMSU Beef Specialist, Dr. John Wenzel NMSU Extension Veterinarian and Tom Dean NMSU Southwest Director and Co-Director for the Southwest Border Food Protection and Emergency Preparedness Center. The day was aimed at providing local producers with resources and education on better management for their operations.
Dr. Marcy Ward spoke on the nutritional requirements of a New Mexico cow herd and gave management strategies for best management practices during times of drought and how cattle producers can best use the resources that they have to survive during times of drought.
Dr. Craig Gifford presented on calf marketing considerations when marketing your calf crop. He provided resources and advice to producers on getting the most from their calf crop. Dr. Gifford also informed the producers of the NMSU ACES and ACES Plus calf marketing program that is designed around a vaccination guideline for optimum calf health to provide cattle producers with a premium when selling their calf crop to buyers.
Tom Dean provided several considerations and advice on how to best prepare for a wildfire event around the family home or on the operation. He provided producers with guidelines on how to make their facilities and homes more safe to prevent the damages that could be caused by wildfire.
Dr. John Wenzel ended the day with education on better herd management through the use of beef quality assurance guidelines. Beef quality assurance (BQA) guidelines are set forth in an effort to meet the demands of today’s consumer and the beef industry. The training covers proper vaccination methods and handling procedures for beef cattle on the ranch. Producers were able to test their knowledge on BQA methods and procedures by completing an exam to become BQA certified producers.
A coffee break was sponsored by the Copper CowBelles. The workshop was well attended by producers and was a great morning of learning.
