NuestraVozNuestra Voz: The Chihuahua Hill Story Opens Sept. 29 at The Silver City Museum

Silver City -- The Silver City Museum’s latest exhibit “Nuestra Voz: The Chihuahua Hill Story” opens Friday, September 29, in the Dodge Gallery. This unique and innovative exhibit tells the story of Chihuahua Hill, one of Silver City’s oldest neighborhoods, primarily through audio recordings of people who've lived in the neighborhood, many for their entire lives.

The center of the exhibit is largely organized around three key themes which were identified from the more than 80 hours of audio recordings of interviews conducted by Javier Marrufo, curator for the museum.  The themes of circumstance, including poverty, discrimination and resilience, along with social issues such as education and economics, and finally, culture, will be presented using objects, as well as the voices of Chihuahua Hill residents, accessed through some 40 QR codes located throughout the exhibit.

The exterior walkway will feature vignettes from life on Chihuahua Hill, which take the viewer through time from the 19th Century to present day.

"I'm very excited that the voices of the 75 people whom I've interviewed for this project will now be heard as the centerpiece of this huge, historical resource that we've built," said Marrufo. "I believe it offers people an opportunity to take a closer look at what really defines culture; that it's so much more than a box that we check, but something very personal and deeply complex."
