Meet Iris Nolasco
New Executive Director

As I wrap up my first three weeks as the new Executive Director of The Commons, my heart is full of appreciation. The welcome I have received is incredible and indicative of what this community represents and the reason why I choose to help support it through the mission and the work of this organization.

Part of my journey started at The Volunteer Center (TVC) of Grant County as an AmeriCorps volunteer and then staff member from 2007-2009.

The origins of The Commons are dear to me because much of my time was spent working across the county on a community assessment to gather input of the wants and needs that mattered to residents of Grant County, particularly as they pertained to food security. My experience during the two years I was involved with TVC have been the foundation to many other work and educational experiences that I have had since.

Food systems, conservation and community development are the core of what I have always been involved in, whether it be working in a restaurant, helping marginalized farmers start their own businesses and secure land, or working on nutrition education and gardening with Panamanians during my service in the Peace Corps. Thankfully all these experiences have led right back to my hometown and this position.

I am in awe of the meaningful impact that community partners, volunteers and this amazing staff are dedicated to each day to lift this community up. I look forward to helping support them in what they do best, and being back in this gem of a town in the southwest!
