Dear Editor:

This is a character reference letter in behalf of Billy Billings, who is running for Grant
County Commissioner in next month's election.

I have known Mr. Billings for over thirty years. He's been an outstanding neighbor to me and my family. Our ranch and cattle operation sits next door to his, here in Grant County, just south of Silver City. His father and mine were also good friends and neighbors for many years. Each of them spent a lot of time teaching Billy and me about taking care of cattle, wildlife, and especially the land. Now we're doing the same as we prepare our next generation of land stewards.

For me it's been a serious concern to hear of the latest controversial political issues brought up by Billy's adversaries. Their aim would substantially diminish or completely close down the livelihood of our community, which involves two important pillars of our local economy, ranching and mining. I'm one who believes that job opportunities are key to the well being of any community, yet the political adversaries of Mr. Billings and his team think otherwise.

These misinformed folks, newcomers to our community, don't seem to understand basic economic principles, and much less about how our local economy and community came to be; and how jobs, business, educational institutions, family and neighbors, and stewardship of the land and nature are all connected! More specifically, these left leaning activists need to be reminded of Bill Clinton's presidential campaign slogan, GǣIt's the economy, stupid.Gǥ

Mr. Billings is a spiritual, church-going family man. If I've ever needed help from my neighbor, he's been there for me. Billy is the first one I can depend on! He's a man of great and noble character, being honest, truthful, and trustworthy in his dealings. Mr. Billings has a sincere passion and love for the land and a good understanding of our local economy, and what must be done to grow it in a sustainable manner, so that our community can remain stable as it grows.

I would very much appreciate the support of the members of our community to elect Billy Billings as our new Grant County Commissioner.

Sincerely,

David A. Jones
