In response to the derogatory comments made by Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) about same-sex marriage, Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-NM) issued this statement:

“I am extremely troubled by Rep. Steve Pearce’s comments about same-sex marriage. His suggestion that legalizing same sex marriage would lead to polygamy and widespread fraud, with couples marrying simply to gain healthcare benefits, is deeply offensive. Further, Rep. Pearce’s statement trivializes AIDS and perpetuates damaging, worn-out stereotypes.

“New Mexico needs a governor who values equality and justice, and takes the challenges that LGBTQ+ New Mexicans face seriously. Steve Pearce’s abhorrent statement demonstrates that he sees LGBTQ+ New Mexicans not as equal citizens who are to be valued and respected, but as a harmful drain on public benefits that must be contained.

“I am proud to have stood on the right side of this issue throughout my career, including when I co-chaired the NM Unites for Marriage campaign in 2013 to push for legalized same sex marriage. As a public servant and elected official I worked to expand access to the healthcare New Mexicans need regardless of age, race, gender, or sexual identity. As governor, I will work every day to build a more inclusive state and lead by treating all New Mexicans with the respect they deserve.”
