Pearce Touts Tech, Fewer Regulations During Las Cruces Visit

Las Cruces Sun-News, Aug. 16, 2018

LAS CRUCES - U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce, the Republican candidate for New Mexico governor, stopped in Las Cruces on Wednesday morning to tout his vision for economic development in the state.

Pearce held a campaign news conference adjacent to the tower, 506 S. Main St., that houses a Las Cruces-based national tech company called Electronic Caregiver. The event, the second by a gubernatorial candidate in Doña Ana County this week, is another sign campaigning is heating up ahead of the November general election.

Tony Dohrmann, CEO of Electronic Caregiver's parent company, SameDay Security, touted his company's accomplishments, including the development of multifaceted artificial intelligence system aimed to boost in-home health care for elderly patients. The enterprise, which has garnered $31 million in three rounds of equity funding, is poised for big growth. And Dorhmann credited his success to mentorship and inspiration from Pearce…

Boosting tech

Pearce, who's held southern New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District seat for all but two years since 2003, said, if elected governor, he'd encourage the tech industry's growth in the state. He said that would be one of three main areas of economic focus, the other two being reinvestment in rural communities and better equipping people for blue collar and trades jobs. At issue, Pearce said, is that talent leaves the state when people go elsewhere to find employment.

"They want to stay, they want to raise their families where they grew up, but they must have the opportunity," he said…

Pearce: Business faces roadblocks

Pearce has said he'd promote the State Investment Council helping to finance businesses in New Mexico. He said there are about six steps in a company's growth stages. And the state is doing well investing at the early and final stages. But investment in the mid-stages is lacking, he said.

In addition, Pearce said he thinks there are too many regulatory roadblocks to businesses. Often, they must go through several layers of regulation to get off the ground, he said.
"I've been told it's very difficult to get business licenses," he said. "Those are things that just discourage people. We want to be a helping hand."
