Anglican Church of the Holy Trinity starts project for teens

The Anglican Church of the Holy Trinity is about to start with a unique project in Silver City that is trying to reach kids ages 13-16/17 to help them meet their needs in more successful ways and to teach them life skills like improved reading and math, sewing, knitting, cooking, repairing bikes, getting along with the elderly, saving money, spending wisely, first aid, etc.

This project, called "Because Teens Matter", is sponsored by the Anglican Church here in Silver, and is led by Fr. Henry Hoffman, priest, Joan Eng, Deacon, Maria Dominguez, who just retired from 30 years as Student Resource person at WNMU, and Chris Eng, who has worked in Juvenile Community Corrections and law enforcement for years. Our goal is to reach kids who fall through the cracks and give them adult support, supervision, and connection.

Our opening "bash" is a get together at the Anglican Church, which meets at the Old St. Mary's property at 1801 Alabama St. this coming Saturday, October 4, from 1:00-3:00, with a band and pizza.

We will be using the Search Institute's "40 Assets for Teens" and Dr. William Glasser's "Choice Theory" to reach these kids. Deacon Joan is certified in Choice Theory, and is capable of teaching the concepts to the adults who will be working with us. We have enlisted a dozen or so community members to help with this project, which of course, is free to the kids.
