Additional ReStore drop-off location

(Silver City, NM, 26 March 2015)

This Saturday will be the beginning of a trial program for people to drop off reusable items at the landfill in addition to at the ReStore. A drop-off site will be set up near the recycling drop-off just before the scales on the way into the landfill at 318 S. Ridge Rd. Collection hours will be between 9:00 and 1:00 on Saturday March 28th. Additional collection events will be on April 18 and May 26.

This program is designed to keep still useful items out of the landfill and give them another life. Personnel from the ReStore and community service volunteers will help unload any items you have but it would help to have it separated from your trash. Acceptable items are tools, fencing, gutters, sheet metal, corrugated metal, stove piping, lumber, doors, wheel barrows, useable tile, paint, cook stoves, wood stoves, water heaters, washing machines, and dryers. Furniture is acceptable only if it is metal or solid wood and in good condition. No pressed wood of any kind. No mattresses, couches, recliners, or any furniture consisting of mainly fabric.

This is a joint collaboration between the Town of Silver City, Southwest Solid Waste Authority, the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Community Youth Building. Surveys of people going to the landfill over the past several months indicated a strong desire to have a location to drop-off reusable items instead of throwing them away. For additional information contact the Office of Sustainability at 519-8987 or the ReStore at 534-9727.
