Register now, for a free workshop on Federal and State regulations pertaining to renovation of buildings with lead and asbestos taught by Janet Kerley. The workshop will be offered by the Town of Silver City on Thursday, September 25, 2014 from 9 am to 1 pm and held at the Besse-Forward Global Resource Center on the campus of Western New Mexico University.

The purpose of the workshop is to improve awareness of lead and asbestos regulations and the hazards involved when renovating older buildings. The Town of Silver City's historic Waterworks building, currently undergoing rehabilitation, will serve as an example and focus of discussion on the potential use of a building based on target cleanup levels.

The workshop will be geared towards owners of older buildings, contractors, engineers, architects, facilities maintenance personnel and Town of Silver City volunteers. It will provide information on where lead or asbestos may be found in a building, precautions to be taken during renovation projects, and certifications needed if a contractor must take on the work. For example, EPA Lead Certification is required for any contractor undertaking renovation of residential or child-occupied facilities built before 1978.

Janet Kerley, from Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager with more than 25 years of experience in hazardous material management and training. She has been an OSHA authorized instructor for Construction and General Industry Standards since 1989, and is the Program Director and Instructor for SFCC's EPA Certified Lead Training Program.

The Town of Silver City is pleased to offer this workshop, which is partially funded by the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division with federal funds from the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. The workshop will be held at Western New Mexico University, in the ABC room of the Besse-Forward Global Resource Center (12th Street), from 9 am to 1 pm on Thursday, September 25, 2014.
