SC DIaDeLosMuertosWhat's it all about? Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a day to celebrate, remember and prepare special foods in honor of those who have departed. It is believed that the spirit of the dead visit their families. It can be thought of as when the spirits of heaven and earth come together in celebration of the lives of those gone before. The tradition originated with the indigenous people of the American Continent, the Aztec, Toltec, Mayan and Incas. It has evolved into a treasured time within for Hispanic culture as well as being enjoyed by others. It is so perfect an occasion for gathering, learning and sharing with friends and family within our community and beyond.

This year Silver City, from October 28 through November 2, will commemorate Dia de los Muertos with many colorful and joyous happenings. This is in collaboration with Silver City Museum, Silver City Library, Western New Mexico University as well as many other organizations, businesses and individuals.

There will be much ado about art, both visual and performing arts, in keeping with tradition. Everyone is invited to join in the always anticipated and festive parade that features costumes, monsoon puppets, non-motorized floats and so much more. For the enjoyment of all, there will be a street festival on October 28th with food, youth activities, arts and crafts booths and mariachi music.

Many creative ofrendas will be on display throughout the community and throughout the days of these traditional events. A Blessing of the Ofrendas procession will be the meaningful finale of the Silver City Dia de los Muertos.
