(Photo by David Thornburg)December is a busy month around Glenwood with fundraisers, parties and celebrations of the season. The two major events are Glenwood Community Library’s Book & Bake Sale and the Live Nativity at Glenwood Community Presbyterian Church.

Book & Bake Sale Dec. 8

Glenwood Community Library’s annual Book & Bake Sale is set for Saturday Dec. 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Glenwood Community Center, 14 Menges Lane, Glenwood. For sale will be books of all kinds for all ages, plus audio books, DVDs and CDs. Also featured are baked goods and homemade goodies galore! Everything is by donation.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle and refreshments.

To add to the holiday atmosphere, local musicians will perform.

From 10 a.m. to noon, Kelly Cranston will entertain with guitar and vocals.

The event is a major fundraiser for the library and its programs. Proceeds keep the Library growing.

Live Nativity Christmas Eve

The Live Nativity and Candlelight Service at Glenwood Community Presbyterian Church is a local tradition that sets the tone for the true meaning of Christmas. It starts at 4 p.m. on Dec. 24 with a bread and soup meal, followed by the Live Nativity with local children playing the roles of the Christmas story and the candlelight service.

The event is held outside the church which is located on Highway 180 in downtown Glenwood.

Other events

Cosmic Campground Weekend is set for Dec. 7-9.  Also, stop by on Dec. 13-14 for the Geminid Meteor Shower. Bring a friend, a red filtered flashlight, shade, lawn chair, and telescope and binoculars if you have them. Enjoy the wonders of the night sky. For more information, go to cosmiccampground.org. The campground is located on Highway 180 about eight miles north of Alma, NM.

(Publicity photo)Movie Night at Glenwood Community Library will be held on Friday Dec 13. This month’s film is “The Man Who Invented Christmas” starring Dan Stevens as Charles Dickens and Christopher Plummer as Ebenezer Scrooge. The film follows Dickens as he writes “A Christmas Carol,” and showcases some of the real-life people who inspired the iconic characters. Showtime is 7 p.m. at the library, 14 Menges Lane, Glenwood, New Mexico 88039.

Every Saturday

The Glenwood Street Market, still going strong with a variety of unique arts and crafts, and baked goods, produce and snacks.  Vendors have created lots of holiday-themed items as well as special handcrafted ones that make great gifts. The market is open from about 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Highway 180 in downtown Glenwood.

Coming attractions

The annual Santo Nino de Prague Fiesta is set for Jan. 4. It features dinner and Bingo – a fun way to start off the New Year.  The All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner is held from 4-6 p.m. and costs $10. Take-outs are available.

Bingo begins at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $15 for adults and $5 for kids (12 and under).  Prizes for games will be cash and baskets. There will be a $100 Blackout game for Adults and a $25 Blackout game for kids. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. The event is being held at the Glenwood Community Center, 14 Menges Lane.
