(Courtesy Photo)Six short plays, a mix of drama and comedy, will be presented October 12, 6 pm, at Silver City’s First Presbyterian Church, 1915 N Swan St. Three of the featured playwrights are Silver City residents: William Knuttinen, John Little, and Frost McGahey. The other playwrights are from Santa Fe, NM; Miami, FL; and Camano, WA, according to Silver City Community Theater (SCCT) President Thomas Leeper.
“We received more than 20 submissions from playwrights across the country. And, 18 actors will take the stage October 12.” said Phyllis McQuaide, SCCT Board Member and Producer of the show. “We anticipate a really fun evening! Featuring:
- Aiden Nightengale and Luis Felipe Feltrin in Lord Lucan for Dinner, by Frost McGahey. Lord Lucan, a famous aristocrat, is hiding from the police after an accidental murder. Wanting to disappear forever, Lucan enlists the help of his surgeon friend, Ian, to make sure it happens.
- Gregg Jarrette and Phyllis McQuaide in Can, Can’t, by Michael Burgan. Tom is a dumpster diver who makes money on the side selling what he finds in other people’s trashcans. His significant other, Maria, confronts him about his habit and tries to convince him to stop it once and for all.
- John Little, Gregg Jarrette, William Knuttinen, Linda Browning, Jake Sipko, and Raul Turrieta in Remembering Johnny Banks, by John Little. Residents of Millie’s Assisted Living Home were unable to attend the funeral of Johnny Banks earlier that morning. They reminisce about the iconic and prominent member of Silver City.
- Liz Mikols, Theresa Murphy, Phyllis McQuaide, Becky Carr, and Susan Golightly in Crazy Quilts, by Karen Fix Curry. A young woman goes to interview a quilting group and finds herself being interviewed for inclusion in their exclusive secret club. Will she join their pay it forward group?
- William Knuttinen, Dianne Maughan, and Liz Mikols, in Meaty Surprise, by William Knuttinen. Two animal rights activists attempt to sabotage a Vegan restaurant for not being devoted enough to the cause, only to find out that their own efforts have been somewhat lacking.
- Greg Bond and MaryAnn Marlar in The Happy Place, by Joyce Newman Scott. Ethel decides today is the day to set her dead husband's ashes free in his Happy Place. Burt’s job is to detain her. While they wait, they discover how much they have in common.”
“We think local theater fans will really enjoy this unusual evening,” said Theresa Murphy, SCCT Membership Chair. “It grew out of July’s playwriting workshop, part of SCCT’s 2019 almost monthly series of workshops and events. While presenting quality theater for our community, we want to encourage people to get involved—we are recruiting not only writers and actors but also members interested in stage sets and props, makeup and costumes, publicity and ticket sales, and directing. SCCT grew out of a series of acting classes presented by The Western Institute for Lifelong Learning (WILL). Several class members joined forces to create the Silver City Community Theater. Now after 5 years and many productions, SCCT’s mission continues: to enrich, educate and entertain the Silver City and Grant County communities by providing a broad range of live theater experiences on a recurring, seasonal basis.
