FiberOpticClass SFCC Fiber Optic TrainingSFCC partners with Grant County to offer free workforce development training

Online trainings begin on February 20, in-person training begins May 13

SANTA FE, NM – Santa Fe Community College announces a partnership with Grant County to offer free workforce development trainings. The popular workforce trainings offered by SFCC include online sessions for a Customer Service Bootcamp (on either February 20 and June 4) and Hospitality Industry Overview Trainings (Thursdays February 22 - March 21), as well as in-person certified fiber optic training (either May 13-17 or Oct. 28-Nov. 1).

Randy J. Hernandez, Planning and Community Development Director of Grant County, said, “I’m excited that Grant County, with funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, has partnered with Santa Fe Community College to conduct a series of workforce development trainings.  These free educational trainings are available to all employers, employees and the public with the intent to develop career-based opportunities that foster prosperity for individuals, businesses and our community while building a resilient and competitive workforce.”

 “Santa Fe Community College is honored to work with Grant County and your communities,” SFCC Dean of Continuing Education and Contract Training Kris Swedin said, “We deliver quality workforce training tailored to the needs of employers and students. Completing students will earn SFCC Digital Badges that can be shared with employers to showcase their skills.”

These are the trainings being offered:

Customer Service Bootcamp: (Session 1) February 20 Online Live Zoom Sessions 9 a.m.-12p.m. & 1-4 p.m. (Session 2) June 4 Online Live Zoom Sessions 9 a.m.-noon & 1-4 p.m.

Customer Service Bootcamp offers a free 1-day customer service training that will help individuals deliver exceptional customer service. From projecting confidence to dealing with challenging situations, this learning event is packed with practical take-aways individuals will be able to put into practice immediately to earn their customers trust and confidence. Individuals who interact with customers and want to learn how to become a customer advocate, develop and deliver empathy and learn a proven process to deal with challenging customers are invited to join.

Hospitality Industry Training: (Session 1) February 22 – March 21 Online Live Zoom Sessions 9 a.m. -noon (Session 2) June 5 – July 3 Online Live Zoom Sessions 9 a.m.-noon.

Hospitality Industry Training includes a free 5-part training series that provides an opportunity to learn about the many job opportunities within the hospitality industry as well as the skills and mindset necessary for a successful career. The series includes modules in Hospitality Overview, Effective Communications, Professional Presence, The Guest Experience and Guest Recovery. Expect practical and actionable techniques, group discussions, industry insight and trends and tips to get ahead.

Certified Fiber Optics Technician Bootcamp: (Session 1) May 13-17 8 a.m.-5p.m. In-person at the Grant County Conference Center (Session 2) Oct. 28 – Nov. 1 8 a.m. -5 p.m. In-person at the Grant County Conference Center.

Certified Fiber Optics Technician Bootcamp is a free 5-day hands on intensive program that gives students the opportunity to earn three certifications from the Fiber Optic Association that are recognized throughout the world and aligned to industry standards. Students must be able to distinguish colors and have good finger dexterity. No prior workforce training is required. Must be at least 18 years of age to participate. These certifications include Certified Fiber Optics Technician, Certified Fiber Optics Specialist: Testing and Maintenance and Certified Fiber Optics Specialist: Splicing.

The Certified Fiber Optics Technician Course is an introductory 3-day fiber optic tech course designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optic Technician. Students will learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards. This Fiber Optic training combines theory and intensive hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the Certified Fiber Optic Technician test that is sanctioned by the Fiber Optics Association and given and graded the final class day.  

The Certified Fiber Optics Specialist: Testing and Maintenance Course is a 2-day, 16-hour program designed to offer advanced training to anyone involved with the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. A focal point in the program is to offer a general, easy to understand approach to fiber optics testing standards with little theory and considerable hands-on activities. This comprehensive program explains the variety of testing standards, equipment and technological approaches used in fiber network testing and splicing and how to choose among them.

The Certified Fiber Optics Specialist: Splicing Course includes a complete PowerPoint presentation explaining the importance of high-performance splicing and further details necessary to achieve these splices. Intensive hands-on classroom activities provide training in both fusion and mechanical splicing of either single or multimode fiber optic cables. Students will learn how to identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fiber cable to existing standards.
