Join us as we dedicate the latest mural project of the Mimbres Region Arts Council (MRAC) Youth Mural Program on Sunday, August 3, at 1:00 pm at the Murray Ryan Visitors Center, 201 N Hudson Street.

This part of the mural project has taken several years to complete and has been done in three phases. Students met with the community to discuss what brings people to Grant County. And these completed phases begin the process of illustrating the ideas that the meeting produced. More phases are planned with each phase looking complete as the mural progresses.

Phase I of this project highlights the Mimbres culture. Artists Peter Bill and Diana Ingalls Leyba worked with students from WNMU. Kathryn Allen worked with Sarah Pineda's Cobre High School art students and Alison Phillips' 5th grade Jose Barrios Elementary students. Installation was done by artists Kathryn Allen, David Palmer, and intern Junchen Huang.

Phase 2 and 3 highlights the natural world and vistas that draw people to our area accented with more Mimbres designs.
Artist David Palmer worked with Judy Miller's Aldo Leopold High School art class on phase 2, Diana Ingalls Leyba worked with Aldo's Youth Conservation Corp and Alison Phillips worked with Jose Barrios Elementary and Aldo Leopold Middle School art classes.

The tiles were made, glazed and fired by the students at their mentors' studio/shop, Leyba & Ingalls Arts Supplies & Gallery, on Bullard St. While waiting for tiles to dry and space to make more, the YCC group would work on other murals at Penny Park and the Silver City Recreation Center.

With the Youth Mural Project, MRAC has embarked on several programs that are dedicated to the youth of Grant County and the surrounding region. With funding from New Mexico Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and local Sponsors, Grant County youth take part in the planning, designing, and production of murals in the region.
