The Grant County Commission held a brief special meeting this morning for one purpose.

They approved the property tax rates for 2013.

Assessor Mary Guthrie said the tax rates for the county are down except for Silver City. "I thank the appraisers for their hard work in bringing in more value."

Manager Jon Paul Saari said the special meeting was required because, "as soon as we receive the rates from the state, we have only five days to get them approved."

Guthrie told the Beat that more value was created with state-assessed property, more for county-assessed property and more for copper production. "That helps bring the rate down."

In a comparison of 2012 and 2013 tax rates the overall state rate remained at 0.001360, and the county residential rate went down from 0.006284 to 0.006310. Non-residential stayed the same at 0.0011850, while county debt service dropped from 0.001510 to 0.001194.

The rates drop when more value is brought onto the tax rolls. An individual's tax bill, depending on the appraised value of his home or business, may rise or drop with the tax rate change.
