New Mexico State Police say a dust storm that limited visibility to almost nothing on Thursday evening caused a chain reaction crash on I-10 in Hidalgo County, killing six people.

According to state police, three passenger vehicles, an RV and three semi trucks were involved. The lead vehicle suddenly stopped on the interstate near milepost 6, causing a chain reaction of rear-end collisions.

The collisions resulted in the vehicles catching on fire.

Three passenger vehicles and three semi trucks burned completely. The RV sustained some burn damage.

The exact sequence of events is still under investigation.

State police will not release the identities of the deceased until all next of kin have been notified.
The roadway where the collisions took place sustained damage due to the vehicle fires. The speed limit in that area will be reduced at this time.

Editor's Note:Those signs on the highway are there to remind you to slow down when it's windy and dusty! And slow down even in driving rain, which also limits visibility.
