Fireworks and celebrations go together, especially during the Fourth of July, but in New Mexico, drought conditions have made the use of fireworks extremely dangerous.

Check with your local law enforcement or fire departments to see if there are restrictions in your area.

Esitor's Note: Silver City and Grant County do have fireworks and fire restrictions in place.

New Mexico State Forestry recommends enjoying your local municipal or community fireworks display this year because of the extreme fire danger, but if fireworks are legal where you live and you decide to set them off on your own, be sure to follow these important safety tips:

•Fireworks are NEVER allowed on public lands in New Mexico. These include New Mexico State Parks and Monuments, National Forests, Parks and Monuments, municipal parks and open space.

•Check with your local fire departments for details specific to your community regarding other restrictions.

•Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks.

•Read and follow all warnings and instructions.

•Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks.

•Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials.

•Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.

•Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.
