At this morning's regular Grant County Commission meeting, in the first order of business, commissioners named Charlene Webb as the new county manager.

Webb, who was born in Silver City, raised in Cliff and graduated from Cliff High School, will return home.

"I have accepted the job," Webb told the Beat. "I'm still in shock, but I'm honored to have the opportunity to come back home and go to work for the citizens of Grant County."

She said: "We're all very excited about the move," which will include her husband and their 13-year-old daughter. Her son will remain in Portales, where he works in a family business.

Webb has been employed by Roosevelt County in Portales for 13 years, with 12 of those serving as county manager.

Grant County is now negotiating the contract with Webb, and, although Webb doesn't exactly know when the move will occur, she expects to be at work by early September.
