According to New Mexico State Police Sgt. Scott Merrill, a motorcycle and its operator were involved in a crash on U.S. Highway 180 between mile markers 24 and 25 near Hurley at 12:40 p.m., on Wednesday, July 23.

The motorcyclist, whose identity was ascertained from unofficial sources, is Don White Jr. of Grant County. He was airlifted to a hospital in El Paso at about 1-1:30 p.m., with "very serious injuries," Merrill told a Grant County Beat reporter. He was not wearing a helmet, Merrill said.

According to Merrill, Orlando Chavez, 23, of Hurley, was driving his black Dodge truck erratically and ran the Harley-Davidson motorcycle off the road as White was traveling north.

The two vehicles didn't actually hit each other, Merrill stated, and no injuries were reported in Chavez's vehicle.

The accident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed yet. However, Merrill said, it is likely charges will be brought against Chavez.
