March 26, 2013 Prepare for Fire Season
By Linda Gray

Silver City's Town Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday March 26, 2013 at 6 pm.

COUNCIL COMMENTS: Mayor Marshall reported that the town will lose close to $190,000 in annual state funding because of the legislature’s decision to phase out reimbursements to local governments for not taxing food and medicine. While there was no formal discussion by the Council on this issue, Mayor Marshall expressed deep disappointment with the time the legislature gave to this issue (17 minutes).

On a lighter note, Mayor Marshall said that plans and discussions for a baseball field at WNMU, improvements to the golf course, opening the swimming pool at WNMU, and a possible new movie theater in town all are progressing and will greatly enhance the attraction of Silver City for tourists.

Reports: Fire Chief Rudy Bencomo reported that many groups and organizations are scheduling fire preparedness meetings. The fire department can arrange a talk for your group. Chief Bencomo encourages everyone to get to know your fire department, including the Volunteer Fire Departments. Groups holding fire prevention meetings are:
1.    Rotary, April 2, noon, in the WNMU Student Memorial Building. Lt. Aric Ray is guest speaker.
2.    Tyrone VFD, April 10, 6 pm
3.    KiwanisClub, April 16, noon, at the Red Barn. Lt. Aric Ray will speak about the Quail Ridge Fire.
4.    Pinos Altos VFD April 13, noon, Wagon Wheel Land Station. Guest speaker is Ellen Brown, USFS Fire Prevention Coordinator.
5.    Dos Griegos Homeowners Association, May 18.

Unfinished Business:
Ordinance 1218: the Town Council of the Town of Silver City owns a parcel of land facing 32nd Street, adjacent to Fox Field and the tennis courts. The land is being used as an unimproved public parking lot. Silver Consolidated Schools (SCS) has access to certain funding which will allow the parking lot to be paved and provide for more comfortable and safe parking for the public; SCS owns a portable building located at the Ben Altamirano Sports Complex that will be transferred to the Town for public use. The Town finds that transferring ownership to SCS with appropriate terms and conditions is necessary to the health, safety and welfare of the Town and its inhabitants. The Council voted to postpone any action.

New Business:

1.    The Council approved two permit applications for the “Silver City Tour of the Gila Powered by SRAM” Bicycle Race Beer Garden on May 4. The License Holders are High Desert Brewing Company and Little Toad Creek Distillery. The Beer Garden will be located in the space between Morning Star and Western Stationers.
2.    The Council approved street and drainage improvement at Texas and Bullard Streets contingent on approval by DFA.
