A Silver City Police Department officer was called to a residence on 35th Place at about noon on Monday, Dec. 18, 2023, in reference to a robbery. According to a SCPD incident report, the officer made contact with the victim, a 31-year-old male of Silver City, who stated he was parked on the street outside the residence after giving a friend a ride home.
While he was parked outside the residence, a male he identified as Juanito Woods, described as 24, also of Silver City, made contact with the victim and began arguing with him regarding some money owed him. During the argument, the victim said Woods pointed a pistol at his head through the window and stated he was going to shoot him. According to the report, Woods asked him to open the car door, but the victim said he could not and rolled down the window instead, whereupon Woods struck the victim twice in the face with his hand and then struck him in the face with the butt of his pistol, causing the victim to bleed.

A criminal case in which a six-year-old child was abused by her mother came to a conclusion December 20 with a Deming woman being sentenced to 21 years in prison. According to District Attorney Michael R. Renteria, Rosa Gonzalez, 34, was sentenced for abusing her biological child starting when the child was three years old.
According to Court documents, the abuse was discovered when a Bell School employee alerted authorities after seeing the child at Wal-Mart and noticing she was not wearing shoes and had a serious cut on her wrist. When Deming Police Department officers went to Gonzalez' home to conduct a welfare check on the child in August 2022, they found the child with injuries to both wrists and bruises on her face. Makeup had been applied to the child's face in an apparent attempt to conceal the bruises. Gonzalez was charged with first- and third-degree felony counts of child abuse, and all of the children in her home were placed in custody of the Children, Youth and Families Department.

Wreaths Across America takes place across the country each year, with wreaths provided by a wreath maker in Maine. You can find the history of the event and the group's continuing mission at this link: https://wreathsacrossamerica.org/About/OurMission .
Thanks to organizer Mary Cowan, who has served as coordinator for 14 years, the program for the past six years at Fort Bayard has succeeded in having sponsors, from local individuals to area businesses, provide a wreath for every grave marker at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. This year, sponsors totaled more than 500. The feat is replicated by only a few other national cemeteries, so Grant County and surrounding counties, not surprisingly, step up each year to sponsor wreaths.
