Reservations are now being accepted for a state-mandated Alcohol Server Training class which will be provided April 10 in Silver City by Border Area Mental Health Services (BAMHS).

The class is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Suite 11 at Hudson Street Plaza, 315 S. Hudson St. Cost is $35 per person. Actual classroom instruction takes just over four hours and concludes with a written test. Persons must pass the test with a minimum 80 percent score, according to Steve May, BAMHS program specialist and instructor for the class.

Servers and sellers working in licensed liquor establishments must be certified every two years by the New Mexico Alcohol and Gaming Division (AGD), May said. "We have a mix of people taking the class," he said. "New hires in liquor establishments must take the class and become certified within 30 days after starting their jobs, while others enroll to become re-certified." A temporary certification will be issued to enrollees who successfully pass the test, and the AGD will mail them their permanent certification cards within 60 to 90 days, he said.

Persons who attend the training should bring pen and paper to take notes and also a valid photo ID. There is no break for lunch and individuals are encouraged to bring a sack lunch if they would like to eat during instruction. Coffee, bottled water and light pastries will be provided during the morning, May said.

For more information or to pre-register, people can contact May at (575) 388-4497. BAMHS does not accept personal checks, only cash, business checks, cashier's checks, or money orders.
