Silver City NM, June 25, 2014--To help outdoor enthusiasts plan a trip to the Gila National Forest, officials are providing information about current conditions across the forest. The fourth article in the "Hike the Gila" series highlights the Wilderness Ranger District.

The Wilderness Ranger District is located in the heart of the Gila National Forest and covers an area of approximately 686,000 acres. The Gila and Aldo Leopold Wildernesses comprise a majority of District. The wilderness areas feature steep mountains, rough deep canyons, flat mesas, large river channels and flood plains. Higher elevations consist of a mixture of pine, spruce, and other mixed conifers, while lower elevation vegetation is semi desert shrub and grassland. There are large areas with pinyon-juniper-oak woodlands and others with ponderosa pine.

The Ranger District offers a number of recreation attractions for the visitor, including the Wilderness areas, Lake Roberts Campgrounds and Picnic Area and the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. Hiking opportunities abound both within and outside of the Wilderness areas.

For those wishing for an adventurous hike, horse ride or a backpacking trip, try the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail #74 as it winds it way through the district with scenic views. Trails along the West Fork (Trail # 151) and the Middle Fork (Trail #157) of the Gila River in the Gila Wilderness provide the hiker or horsemen with opportunities for loop routes and abundant camping. Although route finding can be difficult due to trail damage from the large rain storms of last fall, use of a topographic map, compass, or GPS unit will be helpful.

Many day hikes of varying lengths are available from the trailheads around the Gila Cliff Dwellings. Check with the visitor center staff at the Gila Visitor Center (located at the northern end of N.M Hwy. 15) for routes and conditions

Although the heavy rains from the fall of 2013 storms and repeated large forest fires have impacted most of the trails, work has begun to repair and maintain main routes. Finding sources for drinking water is becoming more limited as the current hot and dry weather conditions persist. Check with the Wilderness Ranger District office for current conditions and water sources.

Visitors are reminded to be prepared with all the appropriate gear needed for a safe back-country trip including maps, food, water, and proper clothing. In addition, leave a trip plan with a friend or family member along with a return date. Remember, cell phone coverage is limited in many areas across the Forest.

Fire restrictions are in effect on the Gila National Forest. Check the Forest website for specific information on fire restrictions. http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3797352.pdf
