The Silver City Museum would like to invite you to visit our latest exhibit titled "A Vessel By Any Other Name." The exhibit will open Friday, February 8, 2013 and run through Sunday, September 8, 20013.

"A Vessel By Any Other Name" will explore the many functions of the containers we use in our daily lives along with some surprising alternative uses for common objects throughout history. The exhibit will give our guests a chance to see objects from our collections that are rarely seen.  Items on display will take our guests on a journey from the Classic Mimbres period through the silent era of film with many stops along the way.

Bring the family.  Children can take a trip back in time to a general store and explore what it meant to “come to town” before the  advent of the automobile.  Activities to encourage curiosity include hands-on fun with the different vessels used to carry goods to and from the farms, ranches, and mining communities in which they lived.

There is still time to view  paintings and wood-block prints from the collection of the New Mexico Museum of Art at Santa Fe, "'Dobes – WPA Artist Manville Chapman's Reflections on Adobe …" will be on display through Sunday, February 17, 2013. Photographer Dennis Weller's panoramic photographs titled "Gila Wide" exploring the Gila River valley are also on view as well as exhibits tracing our region's history from its first inhabitants, through statehood, to the present day.

The Silver City Museum creates opportunities for residents and visitors to explore, understand, and celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage of southwestern New Mexico by collecting, preserving, researching and interpreting the region's unique history.
