Silver City, NM – The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Student Activities (MASA) is commemorating Black History Month with several events throughout February. Open to the community at no charge, the events will celebrate the history of music, food and even the Buffalo Soldiers.
The annual students and community favorite Gospel Music Extravaganza, in its thirteenth year, will bring back regionally known singers and groups for a live performance at the Global Resource Center Auditorium. The event is followed by a free soul food dinner catered by Brewer Hills Baptist Church.
Documentary Hour – Each Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Student Memorial Center meeting room, documentaries are shown highlighting African-American life.
Evolution of Music – Celebrate the evolution of music and influence of African-American musicians from past to present with music by D.J. Big K on Friday, February 15 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the Student Memorial Center.
Gospel Music Extravaganza – Regionally known signers including Voices of New Life, Mary Grimes and Rachel Ross perform live in the Global Resource Center on Saturday, February 23 at 5:00 p.m. Event is followed by free soul food dinner catered by Brewer Hills Baptist Church.
Buffalo Soldiers – Program honoring Buffalo Soldiers who served from 1866 to 1899 in southwest New Mexico on Monday, February 25 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Student Memorial Center Seminar Room. Free beef stew lunch served.
Panel Discussion – Listen to the voices of Isaac Brundage, Vice President of Student Affairs; Brante Dashiell, assistant professor of education; Arai Hodari, WNMU student; J.J. Wilson, writer-in-residence; and others on Monday, February 25 at 5:00 p.m. in the Miller Library.
Soul Food Lunch – Lunch served by Sodexho Food Services on Wednesday, February 27 from 11:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Mustang Dining Hall. Meal is $6.97 per person if not on meal plan.
