SCS Superintendent and Associate Superintendent Speak at PFLAG

PFLAG Silver City will welcome Silver Consolidated Schools Superintendent William Hawkins and Associate Superintendent for Instruction Cindy Barris as guest speakers on Tuesday, February 6th, 6:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3845 N. Swan.  Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

Hawkins and Barris will share the school district’s current policies regarding LGBTQ+ students’ rights and responsibilities.

Alexa Tubbs and Matt Leef to speak to Rotary

Alexa Tubbs and Matt Leef, owners of Open Space Brewery, will be the Rotary speakers on February 6, 2024.  Topic: “To Serve as a Symbol and Value the Connection of love for Nature and a Well-Made Brew.” Inspired by their experiences while hiking the Continental Divide in 2019, the couple established the Brewery in Santa Clara NM,

Venue: The Rotary Club will meet at the WNMU Student Memorial Building, Sunset Room, Second floor. The meeting is from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Meetings are open to the public, and guests may purchase their lunch by paying the cafeteria cashier $11.41, and going through the cafeteria line.

WNMU to Create New Career Technical Education Center

WNMUCareerTechWNMU plans to significantly expand its capacity to educate workforce-ready students through a new Career Technical Education Center, to be built in the mining district of Grant CountySILVER CITY—Anyone who has recently needed home maintenance or repair knows that New Mexico needs more skilled workers.  According to the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, that need is only expected to grow.  The statewide need for workers in construction and extraction industries is expected to grow by 11% between 2020 and 2030, and in that same period, the labor market in installation, maintenance and repair is expected to grow almost 13%. The need for health care support workers is expected to grow 22.6%.

NMFA Board of Directors approves Housing Innovation Program

VistaDePlataAt its December 2023 meeting, the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority (MFA) Board of Directors – acting as the as trustee of the New Mexico Housing Trust Fund – approved $500,000 in funding to the Town of Silver City’s Vista de Plata Affordable/Workforce Housing Subdivision as part of MFA’s Housing Innovation Program. The Vista de Plata subdivision provides affordable workforce housing in Silver City to help community members become homeowners. The funding provided through the Housing Innovation Program will go toward Phase 3 of the project, covering infrastructure costs, including drainage, grading and secondary conduit installation. Thin ice at Quemado Lake a hazard to ice fishermen

Thin ice presents a very real risk of falling into frigid water

QUEMADO, NM, January 29, 2024 – Recent warming weather has created dangerously thin ice on Quemado Lake, threatening the safety of anyone walking out on it. The Gila National Forest strongly advises against ice fishing or going on the ice for any reason.

“Although a closure is not in place, I would ask anyone visiting Quemado Lake to remember that your safety is a concern and not go on the thin ice,” said Quemado District Ranger Randall Chavez.

Chloride Canyon Road repairs begin

Contractor to repair 14 miles of forest roads damaged by post-Black Fire flooding

SILVER CITY, NM, January 29, 2024 – A contractor began moving in equipment Monday, January 29, into the Chloride Canyon area of the Black Range Ranger District west of Chloride, New Mexico. Construction activities along the single-lane road will limit opportunities for through-traffic to pass. An alternate route is recommended.

The Silver City Public Library will hold a computer class on Wednesday, February 7, 3:00-5:00pm. This will be a very basic class covering the most essential parts of computer usage for beginners such as mouse usage, keyboard usage, and file and folder structure.
