Author to Speak at Nov. 7th PFLAG Meeting

RevTaraSoughersAfter having to postpone her October meeting appearance, Rev. Tara K. Soughers will be the featured speaker at the November 7th PFLAG meeting, 6:00 PM, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 3845 N. Swan.  The public is invited, and refreshments will be served.

Soughers is an Episcopal priest and mother of two sons, one transgender and one cisgender.  She is the author of Beyond a Binary God: A Theology for Trans Allies.  Rev. Soughers holds a doctorate in practical theology with a concentration in spirituality from Boston University School of Theology.  A graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary, she has served as a congregational coach for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and a spiritual director. She currently serves as the rector of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Silver City.

In her book, Soughers explores theology from the position of a trans ally and as the parent of a trans young adult.  Questions explored in the book include, “What does it mean about God and about humans that there is not a strict gender binary?  How can we incorporate what we have learned about the permeability of boundaries to affirm those whose path does not follow traditional cultural stereotypes?  How might that broadening help us to understand the God who is never two for Christians, but both One and Three?  What gifts does this broader understanding bring to the church?”

PFLAG  is the nation's largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them.  For more information, call 575-590-8797 or go to  pflagsilver.org  or pflag.org.

Rotary Club Scholarship Program for High School Seniors

Each year, the Silver City Rotary Club offers two $1,500 college scholarships to qualified graduating seniors. In the past, these scholarships were awarded to students embarking on an academic program at an accredited college or university. The club has now announced that this year scholarships will also be available to students who plan to attend vocational or trade schools or enroll in vocational programs in colleges or universities. In addition, the club has decided that the scholarships can be used to defray the cost of on-campus room and board or to pay for textbooks or other materials or tools needed for the programs the students will be attending.

Students applying for the scholarship should have a high school GPA of at least 2.5, should be able to demonstrate a commitment to their proposed field of study, should have a history of community service or leadership in the spirit of Rotary’s motto of Service above Self and should be able to make a strong case of financial need.
