Gila Wilderness Centennial anniversary poster contest

Gila National Forest accepts submissions now through December 1

MIMBRES, NM, September 20, 2023 – Calling all artists! The Gila National Forest invites you to submit your artwork for inclusion in Gila Wilderness Centennial posters. The winning contributors’ artwork will be used as part of an outreach campaign happening next year in celebration of 100 years of the Gila Wilderness.

“The designation of the Gila Wilderness on June 3, 1924, was a major milestone in American history, becoming the world’s first designated Wilderness Area,” said Wilderness District Ranger Henry Provencio. “Centennial celebrations in 2024 will incorporate our communities, art, music, food, theatre, and so much more. This poster contest is the primer, incorporating artwork by members of the public into educational and outreach materials that will be used throughout next year.”

Mechanical and hand thinning to resume in Litte Walnut area

Project continues this fall and winter to reduce wildfire threat in high risk areas near Silver City, New Mexico

SILVER CITY, NM, Sept 20, 2023 – The Gila National Forest, Silver City Ranger District plans to resume thinning with heavy machinery and chainsaws in the Little Walnut area this fall and winter. The work continues the Joint Chiefs’ Bear Creek to Signal Peak Collaborative Restoration project, a joint U.S. Department of Agriculture effort between the Natural Resource Conservation Service and the Forest Service. The New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department, Forestry Division, Socorro District, is a key partner, assisting with project assessment and subcontracting with local forestry contractors to complete the work.

Starting on the 6th, The Mayor of Silver City will start off the weekend by tapping the first keg @ 6pm followed by High Note Entertainments, Dj at 8pm playing a variety of music and beats that will have everyone ready to get the weekend started. He will play from 8pm-11pm

October 7 starting at 3pm we will have a beer garden on the street, the road will be blocked off from Bullard and Broadway one block down to Yankie. Beer Garden, Games, and music!! Beer garden 3-10pm

In this FREE drop-in workshop you will make a remembrance candle suitable for a Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda. You may take your finished candle with you, or contribute it to the Grant County Art Guild Ofrenda, which will be on display at the GCAG STUDIO through Nov 4. (You can pick up your candle on the 4th) No registration needed, but you will need a photo (on COPY PAPER) of your departed loved one. All other materials, including the candle, are provided. Forest Service Seeks Applicants for Southern New Mexico Counties Forest Service Resource Advisory Committee

SILVER CITY, NM, Sept 19, 2023 – The Forest Service is recruiting diverse individuals from local communities to provide collaborative input on forest management by serving on the Southern New Mexico Forest Service Resource Advisory Committee (SNM FSRAC). This RAC Committee is authorized under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self Determination Act, as amended.

The SNM FSRAC works closely with the Forest Service to review and recommend projects that benefit forest and watershed health, fish, wildlife, soils, cultural resources, maintain roads, trails and recreation infrastructure and treat noxious weeds. The projects will occur on National Forest lands in Catron, Grant, Lincoln, Otero, Sierra and Socorro counties. The SNM RAC membership represents a wide variety of interests and perspectives. Those interests include recreation, timber, fishing, grazing, mining, archaeological and historic perspectives, nationally and locally recognized environmental and conservation organizations, tribal interest and elected officials. Applicants must reside in New Mexico, preferably in one of the counties where the projects will occur. Applications are due by September 29, 2023.

White Chevy on its side right before Dos Griegos/did not stop as she is on her way to work. GCSO deputy advised no one is around vehicle/it is near the Los Cerros Apartments. Officer requested wrecker for vehicle flipped on its side about 20 yards off the roadway.

Welfare check
N. Swan and E. Spring streets
Caller advised male stumbling around in the area/he fell and is now sitting on the corner. Officer advised out with male/he is okay.

Criminal trespass warning
2501 E. Highway 180
Caller advised a named female who has a CTW is in apparel on the GM side. Officer advised Dorothy Howser was re-issued the indefinite CTW to Walmart/they allowed her to pay for the items she had with her and then wanted her charged for trespassing/clear.
