Joan Woodward, 86, a resident of Tyrone, NM

WoodwardJJoan Woodward, 86, of Bald Mountain Ranch, Tyrone, NM passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at her ranch home after a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by her loving family. Joan was born on December 16, 1936 in Silver City, NM to her parents, Hulda Roukola Mahler from Finland and Ludwig Mahler from Germany. She was the youngest child and had five siblings: Carl, Hulda (Kennett), Wayne, Martha (Crosby) and Esther. Prior to her death, Joan was the only surviving family member. Joan and her siblings grew up in Central, NM and Silver City. She spent her entire life living in the area. She graduated from Teacher’s High School in 1955 in Silver City and then attended New Mexico Western College now known as Western New Mexico University, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1959. She earned an additional master’s degree in education in the late 1960’s. While attending college, Joan was a scholarship recipient. She was also a member of the Chancel Choir under the direction of Rebecca Gamblin. She started singing with the choir at the age of 10 years old. The choir, which was part of the First United Methodist Church, was a prominent community group. The choir toured the area and presented concerts at Christmas and sang at special events around the Southwest. They traveled to Ft. Bayard Hospital monthly and sang to the patients, as well as presented musical selections for the Elk’s Club and the Kiwana’s Club. The annual Chancel Choir Christmas concert at the Methodist Church was an anticipated holiday favorite for all who attended.

Rex Alva Toney, 71, a resident of Pinos Altos, NM

ToneyRRex Alva Toney passed away peacefully at the New Mexico Heart Hospital in Albuquerque, NM, on November 22, 2023, during heart surgery.  He was born March 6, 1952, at Hillcrest Hospital in Silver City, NM to the late Marion Dibble Toney Williams and Wayne Clayton Toney “Chink” of Arenas Valley.  He was preceded in death by his soulmate, Katherine Elgin. 

Rex was a kind and gentle soul with a heart of gold.  He was known to literally give the shirt off his back to anyone in need and was always willing to help a stranger.  He was a native Grant County New Mexican who loved and served his community his entire life. 

As a child, Rex used the Gila Wilderness and Fort Bayard as his playground.  Rex had a love of all things mechanical from an early age.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1971, and proudly served until he was honorably discharged in 1973.   When he returned home from the service, he went to work for Texas New Mexico Power Company as a Utility Man Equipment Driver and Mechanic.  There he forged many lifetime friends before he retired in the late 1990’s.

Delia Marie Esparza "Dee", 33, a resident of Bayard, NM

EsparzaDDelia Marie Esparza “Dee” Born January 18, 1990 to Dora L Esparza, Went into the arms of Our Lord on Thanksgiving Morning, Thursday November 23, 2023. Joining Him at His Table for a Heavenly Banquet.

As a young girl Delia was active in School and Church activities, Karate, Dance, Cheerleading, Girl scouts, Beauty Pageants Ballet Folklorico & Cobre Mariachi, with her Mom always by her side supporting and cheering her on.

She was a Parishioner at Santa Clara Catholic Church and a Cursillista. She loved going camping with her family and was a Raider Fan. Delia had a beautiful voice, singing in her Church and for those she loved, Carino, Amor Enterno, You are my Sunshine and her Grandmas favorite, Los Laureles.  Delia suffered from seizures for several years, despite her heavy cross, she was very loving and had alot of faith. Always willing to help and listen to anyone, without any judgement.
