Raul S. Turrieta, Democrat, is announcing his candidacy for Grant County Assessor, Grant County, New Mexico. He is a third generation native of Silver City NM.

After graduating from Silver High School he joined the U.S. Navy for a three year tour and served in the Navy Reserves for an additional 3 years. Following his service in 1981, he joined the Grant County Assessor's Office as an Enumerator and has been a certified N.M. Appraiser since 1986.

In his 34 years with Grant County Government he served as Chief Appraiser from 1989 to 1998, and he was elected to two terms as Grant County Assessor in 1999 and 2006. Raul was elected Chairman of the New Mexico Association of Assessing Officers (NMAAO). During his tenure as chairman of the NMAAO, he was instrumental in passing legislation on behalf of U.S. Veterans who are 100% disabled. This granted property tax exemptions and freeze valuation for veterans who are 65 years and older and 100% disabled. Raul has been a member of the International Association of Assessing Officers since 1983 and a graduate of the Local Government Leadership Program.

His community involvement includes: leadership and participation in the Grant County Senior Olympics, work with the Grant County Trails Group promoting hiking and walking in Grant County, volunteer work at the Silver City Gospel Mission, participation in the " Walk for the Heroes" and a member and supporter of WILL (Western Institute of Lifelong Learning).
