Former Silver City Mayor, Terry Fortenberry, Democrat, will be seeking the office of  NM State Representatives District 38. Terry served as Mayor of Silver City for 6 years from 2000 to 2006. Terry has lived in Silver City for over 50 years and along with his wife, Jean, has two grown children, Chis and Tracey.

As former Mayor, Terry says his only pledges were to be fair, honest, accountable, and to work hard for each citizen and to maintain a government for all citizens. He intends to carry that same promise to the constituents of District 38. In announcing his candidacy, Terry emphasized that “I am eager and committed to working for the people of District 38. There is a lot of political gridlock in Santa Fe now, and I have always taken pride in my ability to listen and learn for resolving the many issues facing our great state. I believe in good communication, fairness and a willingness to look at all sides of the issues. I want an efficient, ethical and fiscally responsible state government and that is what I will strive for as the Representative for District 38. My whole career has been in public service. I have the leadership abilities and experience to create change. During my tenure as Mayor, the Town of Silver City was experiencing very difficult economic times. My proudest accomplishments were that we were able to continue to provide services to the citizens of the town at the level that they were receiving them; no tax increases were imposed; and more significantly no employees were laid off.”

Terry has over 25 years of law enforcement experience and is currently employed at the Silver City Police Department as a Captain. He also was elected and served as the Fraternal Order of Police state-wide president, a position he held for four years, and represented them on various policy issues at the local, state and federal levels.

Terry is supportive of measures to reduce crime, improve education, and more importantly, create an economic environment for New Mexico to be able to compete for good jobs and maintain the jobs that are currently in our state. “In District 38, the mining jobs and the numerous small businesses have been the backbone for creating our economic base. I intend to support those jobs by making good decisions to help our county grow economically.”

“It is my commitment to listen to the constituents of District 38, and I welcome the opportunity to discuss my candidacy for State Representative with any individual, groups or organizations. I can be contacted by email at terry_fortenberry@yahoo.com or by cell at (575) 590-7969.   I look forward to meeting as many District 38 residents as possible during my campaign. “My roots, my history and my devotion are to the people of my district, and I would appreciate your consideration and vote.”

The primary election is June 5 and the general election is on November 6.
