William P. Dobricky brings business and government contracting experience to the organization.

"I was here doing a presentation March 27 for the SBDC on doing business with the government," Dobricky said. "The former director, Bruce Ashburn, told me he had accepted another position. I said I might be interested. That was on Wednesday. The next Tuesday, I had an interview in Albuquerque and on Wednesday, I got the job.  I told them I would like to start May 1, gave notice at my job in Las Cruces April 19, moved here April 20 and started working April 22."

He said he has been doing government contracting most of his life. "I've been on boards, and I have professional credentials. I worked for a similar organization in Illinois, and I enjoy the work."

"It is gratifying to use my experience to help small businesses get out of trouble or get started," Dobricky said. "Sometimes helping people is talking them into not starting a business."

He lived in Chicago for his first 58 years, got a job in Las Cruces as part of procurement. "I moved to Las Cruces sight unseen, and spent three years there successfully."

"Now I'm in small-town America," Dobricky said.

He commended Christine Staley, the SBDC assistant, and said she was "indispensable," making him feel welcome in Silver City and assisting him in getting acclimated to the town.

"In the three weeks I've been here, I've instituted monthly workshops," Dobricky said. "I've been to community functions, and I'm getting to know the community."

The Silver City Small Business Development Center is located downstairs in Watts Hall at the corner of Swan Street and Silver Heights Boulevard. The organization's management consulting is free to clients. It offers workshops to help people start businesses, as well as write business plans. Its premier course—the 2013 version of its annual Economic Development Course will take place beginning May 19.
