During the May 28 Silver City Town Council meeting, Faye McCalmont, Executive Director of the Mimbres Region Arts Council (MRAC), enthusiastically thanked the Mayor, Town Council, and Town Staff for all of their efforts in making the 18th Annual Silver City Blues Festival a huge success.  She was particularly appreciative of Town Manager Alex Brown and his staff's support and highlighted the stellar performances of the SCPD, Animal Control Department, the Parks Supervisor, and the Department of Parks staff.  In addition, McCalmont emphasized the contribution of the 100+ volunteers who made the Festival's success possible.  She also reported that the Festival had drawn record crowds, filling all local hotels to capacity and even causing some local restaurants to run out of food.  In summary, the event resulted in a significant contribution to the economic health of Silver City and Grant County.

Not to rest on the laurels of past accomplishments, Mayor James Marshall heralded the month of June's arrival with proclamations of two major events for Silver City citizens to enjoy:

•    June 1, 2013 shall be "National Trails Day" – This fun filled day includes hikes and bike rides on local trails, as well as lectures, raffles, and a film by Peter Bell.
•    June 2 to 8, 2013 shall be "Wild Wild West Pro Rodeo Week" – Pat Bearup, Rodeo Chariman, announced the week will be filled with many exciting rodeo events at Southwest Horsemen's Park, June 5 to 8, and Downtown Rodeo Days in Silver City's historic downtown on June 8.

In other good news announced at the meeting, Mary Ann Finn introduced the new Parks and Activities Guide. Town Manager Alex Brown made special note of Finn's dedicated volunteer effort to produce the guide for the fourth year in a row virtually single-handedly.  Brown also announced the official opening of the Silver City swimming pool to the public as of May 28.  Lastly, Chief Ed Reynolds reiterated the success of the Blues Festival from the Police Department's point of view in that it resulted in no police issues or arrests.

During the Business portions of the Town Council meeting, the following ordinance and resolutions were approved:
•    Ordinance 1219 – Pledging the 1/16 Gross Receipts Tax in payment of the Southwest Solid Waste Authority debt, which enables the authority to refinance its Waste System Improvement and Refunding Revenue Bonds, Series 2013 debt to a lower finance rate.
•    Resolution No. 2013-18 – Amending Resolution No. 2013-14, the Town's purchase of the Silco Theater, to simplify the agreement and clearly delineate the responsibilities of parties involved in the purchase.
•    Resolution No. 2013-20 – Supporting Silver City MainStreet Project's application for New Mexico MainStreet Program Grant Funds, which would provide 20% of the purchase and renovation costs of the Silco Theater.
•    Resolution No. 2013-19 – Amending Resolution No. 2013-01 for Town of Silver City Open Meetings to ensure a minimum of 72 hours' notice of said meetings.

Lastly, the Council approved the Mayor's appointments to the following Town positions:
•    Library Advisory Board: Appointment of Nicholas Seibel and Gail Dunigan.
•    Museum Board: Reappointment of Robert Schweitzer.

The meeting was then adjourned.
