Extremely hot and dry weather and southeasterly winds have caused the Silver Fire to be very active today.

The fire has progressed significantly to the northwest over the Crest Trail and is approaching Reed’s Peak.  The fire has also made a few advances to the west where it has partially crossed over the Rabb Trail.  Helicopters and crews are actively suppressing the area where the fire has gone over the Rabb Trail.  Due to the fire’s intensity and heavy smoke, helicopters are unable to be utilized on the north end of the fire.

In addition, all burnout operations have been stopped for the time being.  Due to the wind shift, smoke is very heavy in the Mimbres Valley, Silver City, and other area west and northwest of the fire.  These areas may be observing ash falling from the fire.

At this time, no communities are threatened.

Areas east of the fire are being monitored by air.
