Grant County voters by more than 2-1 rejected the proposed .25 percent increase in the gross receipts tax to pay for proposed infrastructure projects, including reconstructing the Western New Mexico University swimming pool, paving golf cart paths at the Silver City-owned golf course, renovations at the Grant County Business and Conference Center, a multiplex movie theater, and improvements to Bataan Memorial Park baseball fields.

The unofficial tally of votes, according to the Grant County Clerk's Office, was 1,923 for and 4,134 against. The official canvass of votes will be addressed at a Grant County Commission special session at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Grant County Administration Center.
