The Cobre school board met Monday night at the District Office in Bayard with all members present. The very short main session began at 7:08 after the closed session ended. President Toy Sepulveda announced that no decisions had been made in that closed session.  

The Interim Superintendent evaluation was tabled again and will appear on the first
September agenda. This should conclude the work of former superintendent George Peru.

Administrative issues concerned use of facilities and all requests were approved by the board. Those asking for facilities use included Mimbres Region Arts Council, which asked to use the high school Performing Arts Center. DIG IT Youth Volleyball league is permitted to use one of the gyms.

Southwest Youth Football will be using the high school field; Senate Series Men’s Fall Baseball League will be using Howie Morales Stadium (formerly Rominger Field) and No Regrets Basketball has permission to use Snell Middle School Gym.

Under Review of Bills, the board approved a list of checks totaling $176,675.09. The board approved a BAR adjustment on the New Mexico Reads to Lead program, which
reimburses expenses to hire a teacher and set up the project. The submission is for $94,546 of the initial budgeted amount.

In the superintendent’s report, Robert Mendoza noted that Cobre’s first football game would be Friday at 7 p.m. at Silver City. A new student representative to the board, who would keep the board informed of student events, would be chosen shortly.

Mendoza also noted that the Healthy Kids, Healthy Community group, which has a grant administered by the Grant County Community Health Council, sent thanks to the board for the opportunity to present its program to them in an earlier board meeting.

Regarding the Public Input positions on the agenda, Sepulveda questioned the value of the first one, as the public rarely made comments at this one. Nearly all interaction took place at the second one, near the end of the meeting, when people could comment on items not tied to the agenda, said Sepulveda.

Asking for items for the next agenda, the board noted that the Peru Evaluation was yet to be completed. That meeting is scheduled for September 8, again at the District Office.

The meeting adjourned shortly after 7:30. Members in attendance included Frank Gomez, Robert Montoya, Frances Kelly, Frank Cordova and Toy Sepulveda.
