Dan Tressler, who has worked in industry and at Western New Mexico University over his career, has just been named the new Small Business Development Center director.

He moves to the position from the WNMU Admissions Office.

"My first goal is to get out and meet the public," Tressler told the Beat. "I want to continue the development of a success base. I want the stories of successful businesses, who used the SBDC's free services, to get out and be known.

The SBDC offers, at no charge, workshops to help small businesses promote their services. "We hope to have one a month. Ideas I have for such workshops include health care for small businesses; taxes and preparation, which is already planned for November; and insurance for small businesses.

The SBDC has its main office in Watts Hall at the northwest corner of Silver Heights Boulevard and Swan Street, but a business consultant also travels at least once weekly to Deming to work in Luna County. "We are trying to get more involved in Hidalgo and Catron counties, too."

"Because I have worked in both education and industry, I have seen it from both sides," Tressler said. "I'm happy to be here to help people. What I want to do is have the SBDC be a service to all the communities. We will discuss with you what your financials show.  Although we do not make loans, we can help with a list of resources for financial help. The financial aspects of a business include the process, a feasibility plan, a business plan and cash flow analysis.

"We can help small business owners with their financial statements, so they have a better chance of getting financing," Tressler continued. "All our services are at no cost to the client and are funded through the state."

The Silver City Small Business Development Center is one of 20 throughout the state of New Mexico. Visit the website www.nmsbdc.org/silvercity for more information. Those seeking business advice may also call 575-538-6320 or email sbdc@wnmu.edu.
