Grant County Manager Jon Paul Saari gave his two-week notice to County Commissioners in an executive session Thursday, April 24.

Saari told the Beat he has been thinking about it for quite a while, but more seriously recently. He wants to get into the private sector again, so he, in two weeks, will begin as an intern with State Farm doing a home-study course.

He begins the course May 12, but will be available to the county during the transition to a new manager.

"I was given the opportunity, and I took it," Saari told the Beat. "It has given me another opportunity to work with the community, but through the private sector rather than the public.

"Being an agent will involve less travel, so I will have more time with my family," Saari said. "When I took this job as manager, I was told I would last maybe two years. It's been a good ride for 8 ½ years. I will miss the employees, but I plan to work on the private side with Prospectors and the Silver City/ Grant County Chamber of Commerce.""

The County Commission will meet in special session at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 29. Commissioners will go directly into executive session to discuss next steps.
