Marshall Moore, a Western New Mexico University alumnus, said the Great Race started after his time at the university. "But ever since I've been back, since 2007, I've been an official."

He said the race started when Jim Smith was dean of students. Two students, who were tired of studying for finals, took two beds out of Bowden Hall and raced them down College Avenue."

"That was 1967," Smith chimed in and agreed. "We decided there was a better way to do the race, and it's been here ever since. New this year is that students are doing it, which is the way to do it."
